WELCOME to the 5th TILT ⚡️
Hope this week is sprouting in the right direction for you!
What's charging our Tesla this week is the buzzy news from NASA about Mars. Highly encourage you all to put down your sneaky snack and take a look at this. I mean, if the name "Perseverance" doesn't sum up what's already been a hectic 2021 running at full tilt already, I don't know what does.
Speaking of persevering and pushing the innovative leaf, this week we reveal what has been a real test of perseverance for an entire industry in the US: the Cannabis sector. There's a lot to roll out here. Excited to unpack it with y'all...
THIS WEEK’S EPISODE:
The US’ thriving green industry + was it a lost opportunity for recreational cannabis in NZ? 🌿
This one's got it all. All the goss on the green stuff. We dig into the gritty topic of Cannabis and the productization of the plant in the US market, and what has contributed to such a thriving CannabisTech industry. We question whether New Zealand really did f**k up with the referendum results and the consequences in terms of industry innovation. We traverse several core elements: industry dynamics, economics and trade, social consequences and inequities, and the ecological considerations involved in the growth of this sector.
Digging into the impact of US regulatory openness, we get fresh Cali insights from LA-based founder and experienced brand builder Brett Fink who cut his cannabis chops with the founding team at Old Pal. Brett graces us with this thoughts on how far the industry has come in California as a result of legalization and the growing scope of this sector. We chat about multi-state nuances, the East vs West coast paradox, the ‘old guard’ holding back progress and good old supply + demand issues. We learn about some best in class product innovations that have happened and what radical shifts in lifestyle and social norms have been birthed from this.
““In the US we had a massive war on drugs, which is why they’re all schedule 1, which means there’s no medical benefit... which we know is bullshit.” - Brett Fink
Given the stark inequalities in who is benefitting in this burgeoning industry, we ask Brett the hard questions about what NZ can do to ensure the future of cannabis in Aotearoa goes down a more equitable and diverse path. Brett is passionate about projects that target awareness around incarceration for historical cannabis offenses and his involvement in the punchy, #socialfirst, GenZ-oriented #NOTPOT campaign is one to check out. No doubt you will be very enticed to dabble in one of the myriad of cannabis consumer products by the end of this episode. SUPERTILT takes no responsibility for the legality of your consumption decisions... 😉

Digging into the Climate conundrum: Tech vs Policy? 🌱
RECAP:
Now for some extra frothy juice 🧃 relating to last week's episode on Climate Policy vs Tech, the landslide storm that just shut down Texas was testament to the hectic AF weather patterns the world is going to be seeing more and more of. Its been super impactful to witness what happens when a state like Texas gets served this kind of climate smack. What we are seeing is a striking example of how intersectional environmentalism is one of the most pertinent global goals to aim towards. As was seen in Texas, communities of color and lower income were absolutely hit the hardest, as power outages swept the state. The potency of this storm is a heavy reminder of the implications of climate crises and the stark intersectionality with racial inequalities and social stratification.
It strikes a discord with Elon's recent positive touting of Austin Texas being "the biggest boomtown that America has seen in 50 years, at least" in his interview with Joe Rogan. One thing about that snow that Elon (and proud Tesla owners) must be kinda stoked about however is that the Tesla Solarglass roofs do manage to somehow remove the snow and quickly start generating electricity again. Again, the equality piece is so glaringly obvious here, as a solar roof setup costs approx $43k USD. Not a drop in the bucket for many American families. On a lighter note, Texas is now back to quite beautiful temps, with friends in Austin sunbathing in bikinis again... talk about an accelerated 2021!

COMING UP…
Since our episode on Amazon, the Pandemic Giant, who’s been wondering how more companies might leverage autonomous delivery? If this is keeping you up at night (or even if it's not goddamit) then you're in for a treat. We're talking with the co-founder of San Francisco-based Autonomous robotics company, Kiwibot. Are they related to Kiwiland I hear you asking? You'll have to wait and see.
A SUPERTILT move that Kiwibot has made is how they've successfully doubled down on the urgent need for efficient non-human interactions as the #COVID19 pandemic has taken hold of the world. Basically, the future of delivery and robotics looks RADICAL. And we're excited to share it with you! 🌏
