In this week's episode, we question whether it’s tech or policy that will actually make the biggest dent in the global climate crisis. We kick off with the super positive Biden news that has the world exhaling a massive sigh of relief and what this spells for a new era of climate consciousness and environmental intersectionality. We question how things are set to change given the fresh political landscape, and how the US vs NZ is poised to take action.
We get jazzed on diving into the green deals of the future, from decarbonization and energy to EVs and that gnarly topic of Agri + methane. It was brilliant to drop in with international climate policy expert Byron Fay (from his Quarantine hotel in Aussie) and nerd out on the current policy landscape around carbon removal and what is really making the impact, is it tech innovation or is it the policy play...? Naturally we dig into the role that tech leaders are playing in the climate crisis. Case in point: what is Elon doing for the climate scene and what are the resulting agendas coming from government? We froth out on the opportunities that Byron lays out in the realms of lower carbon tech, and how we're only just starting to scrape the tip of the iceberg with these technologies... something that the new $100M carbon removal prize, coming out hot from the Musk camp, has the ability to spark action around. The thinking is that this will help funnel more tech/ entrepreneurial talent towards #ClimateTech, and get even more activation around decarbonization missions. The financial incentive here is clear, and as Byron points out, there's a super strong business case to the ClimateTech play.
“There’s an increasing realization that there is no cost (to climate policy action). It's actually an opportunity. What’s costing us is that we’re already experiencing significant climate stress + impact.” - Byron Fay
Speaking of money, crypto and financial things, the SUPERTILT team find it rather amusing that this Chinese year is the metal Ox. This happens to have a peculiar affinity with it being the 'year of Ethereum' since all ETH crypto addresses begin with a 0x. (The "0x" prefix means hexadecimal and it's a way to tell programs, contracts, APIs that the input should be interpreted as a hexadecimal number). With Crypto looking the way it is (yes, thank you Elon for helping turbocharge the crap out of coins like DOGE, Bitcoin and Ethereum), one could be forgiven for thinking this is all one grand lunar design 🌜🌕🌛.
Recap:
Now for some extra juice on last week's episode on the Google + Facebook vs Aussie Govt. debacle. It was announced just this week that Google has managed to strike up a $30 million/year deal with an Australian company, Severn West Media, the details of which are still TBD. This shows Google choosing to really tone down its threats, following its ballsy claim that it would "pull its search engine from Australia". I mean, who really knows with Australia these days... #nothatingonaustralia (a bit of AUS x NZ competition is only natural!)
MINDFULNESS 🧠 TECHNIQUE OF THE WEEK:
Feeling Stagnant - Empty & Refill:
Breathing practices are practical ways to augment your chemistry and give yourself space 👽 Breathing is autonomic, meaning it happens below the register of our awareness. 🌬 Every breath made conscious is a breath where we know we’re present in our body.
Try putting your breath in a count. It doesn’t matter what the count is, as long as you use your mind to measure so your inhalation and exhalation are the same count without pausing 🌊
Your continuous breath with equal inhale and exhale is a dialogue between your inner and outer self. Your inhale is the wave rolling in the ocean, nourishing and healing you. On your exhale you ride the wave back into the cosmos, beyond the container of your body. Let the oceanic sound of your breath fill your ears 🔈
WHAT WE'RE LISTENING 🎶 TO:
Fresh drop 💧 from our Norwegian-born avant-pop artist Nora Schjelderup. She is the molecule personified: the smallest bit of matter that retains its own identity while being part of something greater. A Molecule is part of something bigger and might not understand its own purpose. Ora is a personified molecule, an identity within something else. It is ok that it doesn't understand itself because it is a molecule. This is the concept.
Just like SUPERTILT, Nora is a strong believer that "community is everything": "It’s very important, but it starts with the individual. If I can contribute to that, I want to do it". So embrace your inner creator + vibe it out ⇒ http://mute.com/ is the place to scope.
Coming up…
Who's been keeping track of the happenings in Myanmar? Yes, while we in NZ have been concerned with Level 3 lockdowns et al, there's been an actual military coup going down in that corner of the globe.
This week we jump into the fascinating question of how the world is messaging each other, especially in times of political fragility and coups. What are the use cases for bluetooth? And why is this so needed in the developing world? We will be chatting with tech founder Jorge Rios, MIT 'Innovator Under 35', who has built a successful company, Bridgefy, that tackles such issues. Having a sudden 1M downloads for it's pressing use case in Myanmar in the last few weeks, we explore what Bridgefy's mission is, and what types of tech is necessary to bridge people, enable critical response and where the future of encryption lies. 🌏
